Week 2: Chapter 2 Reading
Barrett Chapter 2- Describing Photographs
1A). Barrett uses the term description as way to answer all ones questions about the photograph. They are all available to see in the photograph even if they are not obvious to the viewer. Its gives a sense of the who, what, where of the setting of the photograph.
1B). Subject is the message or theme that the photographer is trying to convey to the audience. Subject matter is what is contained in the photograph. It is more specified of the objects being used in the picture ratherthan the overall meaning the picture is telling its audience. Subject matter can be hard to find in a single picture, but rather can be seen in a group of photographs by the same photograph.
1C). Form is how the photographer presents the photograph to the audience. This is strictly from a visual point of view of how the picture is composed and put together. For photography this refers to things such as scale, rhythm, balance etc...
1D). Medium is how the image is composed. This can stem from multiple uses of photographs to photograms which can be composed by use of different materials. In which case, the medium can hold cultural significance for the photo itself.
1E). Style refers to how the use of form and subject come together in the style of the artist and presents to the audience. This can stem from a variety of different kinds of photography and for a photographers style to be determined one must look at the subjects they decide to shoot.
2A). When Barrett refers to compare and contrast he simply means looking at the work and comparing it to another photograph. This could be work done by the same artist or other photographers as well trying to capture the same subject in either a different perspective or the same. However, he notes that one does not need to stop at photography itself and should look to a variety of different sources including professions and literature on the subject and compare the two to see what they have in common.
2B). Internal and external information goes hand in hand with what I had mentioned earlier in regards to comparing other works. The artists outsources to get a bette understanding of the subject matter through a variety of different ways. This overall creates a better presentation of the work and shows the effort that the photographer did when researching the topic. This information could also be used to introduce a piece or incorporated in a finished product of it.
3A). Barrett believes that both description and interpretation work together and you cannot do one without the other. He goes on to say that the descriptive terms a critic uses is influenced by the interpretation gets from viewing it. By combining both of these elements it shows an appreciation for the picture and therefore the description and interpretation all come full circle.
3B). Evaluation is often mixed into the description of an image and therefore is influenced by the descriptors being chosen to use. He also says that descriptors often hold value to them and influence how and picture is being viewed. Critics can very rarely write with neutral terms as they often are meant to hold an interpretation to what they are saying and taking a stance on the picture overall.
4A). The first point I think that author was trying to make was to understand that although it is just photography, there are many important elements that go into the making of these pictures that create as much effort as that of painting an image. Another point I believe Barrett is trying to make is to not limit comparing other images. By doing this it allows the mind to dwell into different areas covering the same subject. This also allows for different perspective on subject and can help form a well though opinion on a piece overall. The third thing that they are trying to convey is that how a picture is described is very important and influence both how the viewers interpret it and overall give a review on whether they like the piece or not.
4B). The things that I learned while reading this is particularly that on the terms mentioned at the beginning of the assignment. Medium and style are two terms that caught my eye specifically because I never realized that there could be a variety of ways pictures can be created and presented. These terms helped me understand that each picture is well thought out with a true intent rather than what I once thought was a point and shoot.
4C). Overall, I found the article to be informative. For someone who is not familiar with the world of photography, it is nice to have these things introduced to me so I can have a better understanding of photography. Everything was also explained in a way that wasn't too difficult to understand or that there was one way to view it. Everything was up to interpretation and allowed for me to not feel like I'm being told "this is fact you must listen to this". This will overall help my understanding in the course when taking my pictures and help me with my final project as well.
